Copper Gutters

Copper gutters can be a stunning, elegant choice of gutters for a home. It can add a sophisticated look, and having quality copper is the only route if you want to go with this material at all. Of course, there is a relatively high price tag associated with this type of gutter system but It is unparalleled in its style and appearance.

This high price tag can pay for itself over time, outlasting many other metals. You will save on replacement costs and the trouble of having to install new gutters. Pricey copper gutters, however, may attract gutter theft in some neighborhoods as well.

Copper gutters have a shiny bright color when first used in any application. This beautiful metal is used in many applications such as minting coins, making kitchenware, to pipes, wires, bicycle parts, and much more. The finish of it starts off very bright and shiny but this color slowly changes over time.

Copper’s Beautiful Color

This color that develops on this metal is referred to as a patina. It is actually a protective surface that is a copper oxide patina. This is a normal and expected change that happens to it.

After a few weeks of being left out, copper gutters usually change color to a bluish green color, or even orange to red hues, purple, green, you name it. It can develop some funky looking colors! These colors will eventually fade in time to a darker red or brown color you are probably most familiar with when you think of this metal.

Some people actually look for methods to speed up the development of the patina on copper. Depending on the application or usage of metal, the amount of time it takes for these transformations can take years. For outdoor applications like copper gutters, it can be anywhere from a few years up to 15 years depending on the sulfur dioxide in the air.

Moisture also plays a big role in the development of the patina. The sulfate patina that develops on the surface of the copper is very resistant to weathering. So once it is fully developed, it will boost the durability and lifespan of gutters.

Some people like the original color of the gutters and want to preserve that. However, there is no long-term solution for that. Temporary solutions of protective coatings can be applied to the gutters to preserve it a bit, but eventually it will still weather and change colors.

Alternatives To Copper Gutters

Of course there are always other materials you can go with such as vinyl, galvanized steel, and aluminum to name a few. A few comparisons on these materials will quickly reveal if you should choose an alternative to copper gutters. Sometimes people want the look of copper gutters, but don’t want to pay the price tag that comes with them. There is an option available where you can purchase gutters that come painted to imitate this great looking color.

There are actual copper flakes inside the paint that gives it this look. It also develops the patina over time like full copper rain gutters do. Personally, I think this is silly. Why pretend to have copper gutters when you really don’t. I would save up for some real copper gutters, or else not get them at all.

Compensation Disclosure

When it comes to buying products or services when using the internet, it is recommended that you should always conduct your own investigations. This includes buying any products or services sold from this website and all other websites.

Material Connection

Unless we have stated otherwise, you should always assume that when products or services are made reference to, they are made because there exists a material connection between the website owner and the providers of the products and services displayed. It should be noted that this is not always the case.

Good Faith Recommendations

The owners of this site will always recommend products and services based in part on a good faith belief that the supply of such products or services will help the person obtaining them. The owner has good faith belief, because the owner has either tried the products or services prior to making any recommendations, or the owners have researched the products or services based on the supplier’s history. The recommendations made by the owner about the products or services are honest opinions based on facts known to the owner at the time a product or service is mentioned on the website.

Testimonials

The owner has conducted all steps possible to verify the testimonials that appear on this site. They are treated as average user expectations based on the information that was available at the time of publishing them. They are not exaggerations of user results which we do not entertain in any form. Enquiries have been made to confirm their authenticity at all times. If a claim sounds untrue then the owners regard this as such and do not publish this on the website.

Where extracts have been displayed from other reviewers, forum posts, and otherwise user comments, these are in no way indicative of any kind of verifiable results. All visitors are strongly cautioned to conduct their own due diligence prior to making a purchase displayed on this site.

We reserve the right to withdraw the display of any product or service that does not reach our very high levels of satisfaction without any prior notice. Any honesty and integrity is important to us at all times.

Potential Bias and Due Diligence

The owners’ opinion about a product or service may be partially formed in part on the fact that the owner is likely to receive compensation for the product or service. The nature of the relationship is sufficient to establish a material connection between the owner and the provider. There will be instances where the owner will not receive compensation relating to the products or services on this website. You should assume that the owner has a material relationship with the product or services suppliers, because the owner has received or is likely to receive something of monetary value from the supplier. You should always perform your own due diligence before purchasing a product or service mentioned on this website.

Compensation

The type of compensation may vary, from receiving payment for a product or service, or receiving complementary products or services. The owner is therefore likely to receive monetary compensation when you make a purchase for a product or service after clicking the affiliate link displayed.

Questions Regarding Any Purchases

If you choose to go with sectional gutters, installing copper gutters can be a good do it yourself project if you know what you’re doing. If you decide to go with seamless gutters, the installation must be done by a contractor. You will need some tools to install gutters at home including: screwdriver, chalk, a saw for cutting gutters to size, a pencil and tape measure.

The most user-friendly self install type of gutters are vinyl ones that are available at large retailers like Home Depot. It comes with step by step instructions so you won’t be lost along the way. Most of the pieces just snap together and the gutters just snap into gutter hangers attached to the fascia board.

You will need to reach the roof, so using a ladder is a common option. For better safety, a scaffolding is a better alternative so you have a much larger base to stand on.

Installing copper gutters, or any type of gutters does require some expertise. Simply put, these gutters are usually installed using fascia brackets that are fastened to the fascia board with screws. This is done right under the roof line, and the gutters are made to sit in the brackets.

Once the brackets are installed you can slowly put up the gutters. End caps of gutters and multiple sections of gutters will have to be soldered together on the spot. You’ll need paste flux, wire solder, and a torch to do this. Downspouts or rain chains can then be installed, depending on which you chose.

Obviously this could get pretty dangerous so you really should consider hiring a contractor if you aren’t well versed in these skills.

For an incredibly detailed look on many ways to install copper gutters, check out this installation article from copper.org. It goes over the many ways to install copper gutters including: strap hung molded gutter, bracket hung gutter with copper roof, hung gutter with copper fascia, bracket hung molded gutter, strap hung molded gutter, and many more.

Copper rain chains are a nice visual addition to already stunning copper gutters. Most of them are around 6 to 8 feet long and are usually about $50 to $100 per chain. They come in designs like links, floral designs, and cups. Sometimes copper rain chains are not made entirely of copper either, but just coated in copper, so double check to make sure you know what you’re getting.

Rain chains have been around for hundreds of years and used on houses in Japan. They only recently have increased in popularity in the United States. They are actually used as a replacement for the downspout. These chains are favored for their visual appeal, which remains simple.

Just like 100% copper gutters, these full copper rain chains will also develop a patina on them given enough time. They look great with almost any type of building, so why not ditch the traditional downspout and work the look of a rain chain into your gutter system!

Here are some great looking rain chains available on Amazon:
Aluminum – $5.00-$9.00 per lineal foot
Faux (fake) Copper – $9.00 per lineal foot
Stainless steel – $20.00 per lineal foot

The cost of REAL copper gutters spans the range of $15.00-$20.00 per lineal foot.

For many folks, copper is the ultimate in gutter materials. And with people paying this price for it, they definitely think it is worth it. These prices are substantially higher than steel, aluminum and the fake copper gutters made available. So much, in fact that copper gutter theft is an issue in some cities in the nation.

For worry-free, rust-free, gutters many options are available including copper, stainless-steel, and aluminum. Galvanized steel, however, rusts, even with the thickest ones used.

Sectional vs. Seamless Copper Gutters

Another factor that affects your copper gutters price is whether you want sectional or seamless/continuous gutters. Sectional ones are sold in pieces so you can do it yourself. Sectional gutters are made with caps, corner pieces and drop outlets for connecting downspouts. The only thing you may have to worry about is that eventually leaks may develop.

With seamless gutters, there are no seams to make way for leaks. Copper gutters are available in the seamless configuration too, but these must be installed by a contractor since you cannot purchase parts and do it yourself.

Gutter hangers are what keeps gutters attached to your roof and off the floor! Having quality hangers will ensure that your gutters are stable and not prone to dropping or breaking from the elements.

Hangers are available for the different shapes of gutters that are made including k-style, half round, hidden hangers, ornamental hangers and more. Different sizes are available to match your gutters too. Most of them are not one-size-fits-all type of hangers. Depending on the weight and strength of your gutters you may require hangers made of tougher material to hold up your gutters. Typically, hangers are put up every 1.5 to 2 feet along the roof.

Types of gutter hangers:

Standard K-style hanger – These are made in many materials – stainless steel will be the strongest. It simply clips to one end of the gutters and screws into the fascia on the other.

Hidden hangers – If you don’t want to see your hangers, hidden ones will be the way to go. It helps show off your gutters more too. These hangers clip to one side and gets screwed into the fascia board on the other.

T-strap – These are used in instances where there is no board to mount the gutter. This strap hanger locks into the gutter at one end and gets nailed to the roof to hold up your gutters.

Wrap-around – Similar to the T-strap, except it goes entirely around the gutter, giving more support. It does look a bit clunky though.

Ornamental hangers are made with some designs if you aren’t into the purely functional, plain style hangers. These can be a very nice touch to good looking gutters. You can find fancy finishes in brass, copper, and patina.

Everyone who has gutters knows how big of a problem cleaning them can be. It’s not just a matter of cleaning them, but clogged gutters can be a dangerous and expensive thing to have to deal with.

One of the ways to help keep your gutters clear is with a gutter filter. This filter idea shares a similar concept to the gutter brush. They are inserts for your gutter system that allows water to pass through freely, while keeping other debris and leaves out of the way.

One company that offers this is American Gutter Filter. They have a few variations on this product that basically do the same job. There are little differences between each depending on your needs. Their “Safe-T-Flow” provides gutter protection with features like fire resistance and additives to keep microbes from growing. These features are standard across the other two lines of products as well: GutterFill Extreme, and their True Flowing models.

The Safe-T-Flow is raised towards the back, to help debris actually be pushed onto the ground rather than sitting on the filter. It also features dual channels for the water to flow, giving the profile look of this gutter filter a “T” shape.

GutterFill Extreme is similar, except it doesn’t have the raised back, or the “T” shape. It is triangular shaped allowing one larger channel for the rainwater to flow through. This model is available for a wide range of gutters including K-Style, Half Round, Fascia, and Box Style gutters as well.

Lastly, their True Flowing line is the most affordable one. It shares the same triangle profile as the GutterFill Extreme except is more basic. It is available for 5″ and 6″ K-Style gutters.

Many other companies are offering similar gutter filter products too, so you will have a variety of dealers to choose from. Check out other brands like GutterStuff, Safe Flow Wave, Owens Coming Rapid Flow, and Leaf Defier.
